10 Dec 09 How do I use a flat panel monitor and my laptop as a dual monitor?

I’ve got a pretty new laptop, so I reckon it’ll be able to dual monitor with a normal flat panel monitor? If so what cables would I need and any other info?

I’m not sure what you mean, but most laptops have a function key that allows you to switch between an external monitor and the LCD screen, but unless you have an extra video card, you won’t be able to do dual monitor.

From what I have experienced before, you don’t need any new cables. Simply connect the cable from the monitor onto the computer, there should be a slot where it fits, possibly on the side of the laptop. Then press “fn” (its a button with blue letters) and look for another button that has a picture of a monitor. Hit both together.

What they are suggesting is not dual displays, but using a monitor instead of the laptop screen.

You need to go to your show properties, and tell it to use the screen as a second monitor. I do this in Windows XP by right clicking on a ‘blank’ spot on the desktop, and choosing properties. You can also get there through control panel. Check out the link below.

Of course it depends on what ports both devices have as well. Most commonly your laptop would have a DVI output and the TV would either have a DVI in or most likely a PC input (PCI) and HDMI.

If the TV has a PCI input you can get a DVI to PCI cable. Or a DVI to HDMI cable. The latter would keep everything in the digital realm.
